Logitech's official response to the mouse pad problems..
First update the firmware and drivers from the Logitech website.
"As stated on the box, the maximum speed of 45-65 inches/second is dependent on the surface.
Many gamers use a mouse pad to get the best performance from the mouse. However, most of the (gaming) mouse pads currently on the market are optimized and designed for optical mice. The optimal tracking surface for Logitech’s gaming-grade laser is different from that of optical (and even performance laser) mice. Because of this, we anticipate that mouse pad companies will begin designing pads for the new laser mice that are coming onto the market. Until that time, we recommend that gamers use the G5 and G7 on light, semi-reflective surfaces that have an irregular pattern. Gamers should avoid matte or very high gloss finishes.

"Razer is committed to making sure the Copperhead exceeds gamer's expectations. We've not stopped listening to users and we have a betadrivers@razerzone.com email list where anyone experiencing a problem can come to us and we will fix it. I think no other company in the world works as quickly as we do to address customer concerns, and the Copperhead is the only mouse in the world that will allow us to address an individual user's problem by updating the firrmware (rather than telling the user to go and try another mouse).
Early shipments of Copperheads may still be carrying 6.13 firmware, we have a slip of paper in the packaging advising users to update to the latest drivers and firmware at razerzone.com. If you would like to assist, You can also update any older mice you find to the latest firmware.
On a related note, it is a known issue that lasers do not have as high a maximum tracking speed as optical mice on rough surfaces (and vice versa, optical mice do not work well on rough surfaces). Here there needs to be an adjustment of customer expectations, their existing optical mousepads may not be the most suitable for this new generation of miceIn future versions of the firmware we will be adding features like scroll wheel setting and scroll wheel acceleration (to be confirmed)."
